Books say Shah Jehan was able to gaze upon his monument to love -- the Taj Mahal -- from the quarters in which his ungrateful son imprisoned him.

The air in Agra was certainly much cleaner in the 17th century than it is today. Even so, the shah would not have seen much of the Taj. In a photo I shot from the balcony of the shah's quarters, with a 6X zoom lens, the Taj appeared as little more than a blur on the horizon.

In the picture, the columns that circle around the canopied balcony form part of what was the shah's 'prison' in Agra's Red Fort.
