Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome: 74 reviews and 182 photos

the S.Maria Maggiore basilica has a great variety of architectural styles in its interior, since it was built in the 5th century and it had several parts added during Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque periods. It?s certainly one of the most decorated churces in Rome. Its gilded ceiling is said to bear the first gold brought back by Columbus from America.

Directions: piazza di S.Maria Maggiore; take the subway and get off at Termini, then walk along via Cavour until you arrive to piazza dell?Esquilino.
