I would stay away from the big hotels on the island. Most of them are good, but often a bit on the expensive side. I did, and would go either to one of the many small hotels, or rent a studio, condo, villa, ... There are so many choices, and they are price wise very attractive. Small hotels around Oyster Pond, Mont Vernon, Orient Beach are often between $ 70 -$ 100, are nice, quiet, and friendly. Or take a studio for less then $ 500 a week.

Unique Qualities: Most places have pools, and great views. There are very few directly on the beach, mostly a short walk. The accommodation on the French side tend to have smaller rooms (Europe like), the ones on the Dutch side might be more adjusted to US-standards, but might be in a busy or noisier part of the island, e.g. close to the airport. Watch out, where it is located.
