This memorial takes quite some space, like a park. I visited it in the evening so by the time I finished walking around, it got quite dark (excuse the quality of the picture). At first I thought it was nothing special, but as I went along discovering more of it, I was stunned by the design and the overall message coming across.

The FDR Memorial consists of 4 large open-air chambers, each one being devoted to one term of Roosevelt's office. They are arranged in sequence so as you walk along, you're taken through 12 years of American history. You see interesting sculptures which portray that era, and you can read various quotes from Roosevelt's addresses. So in fact this is a memorial to the whole era that FDR represents. I'd say it is quite an involving experience to see it all!

The sculpture in this picture portrays Roosevelt in a large cape that covers his wheelchair. Of course, at his feet is his beloved Scotch terrier, Fala. For more pictures go to this travelogue.

The FDR memorial was dedicated in May 1997. Located near the National Mall, on the Western side of the Tidal Basin, along the Cherry Tree Walk.

Address: 900 Ohio Drive, SW
Directions: Located between the Tidal Basin and the Potomac River between the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials.
Phone: (202) 426-6841
