  Rose Garden, Bamberg

Bamberg assaults your senses and this is probably the reason why UNESCO World Heritage added the whole town to its illustrious list in 1993. It is a lovely town that managed to remain completely unscathed from the bombings of WW2. My tour guide hypothesised this was due to the fact that the Americans could not bear to destroy a city with so many breweries! In actual fact, the town was actually due to be bombed but because of bad weather they went elsewhere.

The following is a line I borrowed from the Bamberg tourist site which I believe captures the uniqueness of Bamberg. 'The locals like to stress that their city spreads across seven hills like Rome, has a network of waterways like Venice, and an old city which is at least as beautiful as Prague and on which the same architects left their unmistakable mark'.

Indeed, anyone that visits Bamberg will no doubt leave in complete agreement. A couple of my favourite memories of Bamberg include the beautiful rose garden and sampling their famous 'Raunchbier' which has a smoky flavour and the after taste of bacon. Tastes much better than it sounds I assure you!

Directions: The airports in Frankfurt and Munich (both about a 2 1/2 hour drive away) as well as Nuremberg (about 50 minutes) offer the easiest access to Bamberg.

Of course, it is also accessible by ICE and regional trains and by car on highways A70 and A73.
