Favorite thing: Tordenskiold -- who he?

This statue of "Tordenskiold" stands near the water of Oslo's harbor, in the Rådhusplassen, but I have to admit that I had no idea who or what he was when I snapped this shot. And it took a little bit of research to find out. But I'm not a historian for nothing!!! There are not many web sites in English that discuss the career of the great naval hero Peter Wessel, known as "Tordenskiold," -- Thundershield in English. Wessel was born in Trondheim in 1690, and rose rapidly through the ranks of the Danish navy. (At that time Norway was an appendage of Denmark.) He ultimately became Vice-Admiral of the Danish fleet, and fought couragely in the Great Northern Wars. But his life and career came to a sudden end in 1720, when aged only 30 he was killed in a pistol duel. I also read that he is very much associated with a well-known brand of Scandinavian safety matches. WOW! I learn something new every day.
