Morning sunlight falls on Ganden in Tibet

The oldest of the Three Great Monasteries, Ganden is also the farthest from Lhasa. This is a benefit as it gives the visitor a better idea of what a desolate, monastic town in the Himalayas is like. Although I had different experiences at the three, this was my favorite monastery because I did a walk into the mountains before the sun rose, and I also got to listen to 400 monks chanting in the monastery.

Directions: Located in Taktse Country about 25 miles east of Lhasa, the easiest way to reach Ganden is on the pilgrim bus that leaves well before dawn from the Barkhor.
