"Paris Sewers" Sewer Tour - Les Egouts Tip by Jenniflower

Sewer Tour - Les Egouts, Paris: 4 reviews and 6 photos

'...Paris has another Paris under herself; a Paris of sewers; which has its streets, its crossings, its squares, its blind alleys, its arteries, and its circulation, which is slime, minus the human form'.

(Les Miserables, Jean Valjean; Book II, ch.1)

Paris' first sewer was built in the 1200's: this ws an open trough that ran down the centre of the cobbled road. It was not very effective and contributed to the spread of diseases such as the Black Death. Over the next 400 years the sewer system expanded greatly, becoming underground in the process, and draining into the Seine River.

Napoleon Bonaparte finally brought the sewer system of Paris up to speed. The sewers have been (and still are) a popular tourist attraction. They used to have a 'roller coaster type' mechanical cart, built for tourists to ride in even! haha

There is even a Sewer Museum in Paris!
