If you are arriving by plane in Mexico City you can often avoid the city and the struggle to get to one of the main bus stations by taking an express bus from curbside in front of the national section of the airport. (For many years it has been about a hundred and fifty yards to your left from the customs exit in front of the national part of the terminal, but one VT member wrote that it had been moved although it was still right at hand.) Buses go to Puebla, Queretaro, Pachuca and a few other cities. For example, the bus (Estrella Roja) to Puebla costs about 250 pesos (Price updated 9/20/2005 as per VT member Reynald.) and leaves every half hour. (One quirk about the buses to Puebla is that they alternately arrive at the main Puebla bus station (CAPU) or at a special small station (4 Poniente). The poniente station is a few minutes closer by taxi to the main plaza then the CAPU station. The CAPU station is a bit more hectic, but I would not wait the extra half hour at the Mexico City airport to make sure I got a bus going to the Poniente station. The convenience of these buses is fantastic.
