This is one of my favourite stories: This building, which is now a centre for theatre and concerts used to be the hall of the checkpoint at the subway station Berlin Friedrichstrasse.

When the wall was still there this was the only subway station in East Berlin where West Germans were allowed to get off the train. You could change trains there or then cross the border to go to East Berlin.

When we were little we always just went there to change trains because it was so exciting with all the border police running around with their machine guns. I remember coming from a day in the East back to the checkpoint in the building which is now the tRÄNENpALAST and I saw someone with a plastic bag hanging around in front of the door collecting all the money the visitors still had in their pockets. Very sad, considering that in the East everything was so cheap and people from the west (who had to change 25 DMs into 25 Mark East for each daying staying) always had problems getting rid of all the money...

Anyway it's called tears palace because this was the place where the people of East Berlin had to say good bye to friends and family from the west. A great place, isn't it?

After reunification this historic place has been turned into a cultural centre with lots of comedy shows, concerts etc.

Directions: The address is
tRÄNENpALAST, Reichstagufer 17, 10117 Berlin

It's obviously next to the S- and U-Bahn Station Friedrichstrasse.
