The first room in the Plantin Moretus museum will lead you in the visitor?s room.
The room is dressed with old verdures, tapestries made in Oudenaarde. They are called verdures because ?verd? refers to the French word ?vert? that means green. The verdures are very green coloured tapestries. Sometimes they have close to 100 different kinds of green in them. The tapestries are not originally made for this house, but the one who ordered them could not afford them when finished so they were ?adjusted? and sold to Plantin.
The inside walls of the houses of rich people were often covered with huge tapestries or with gold leader. The leader could come from Spain or from Mechelen (Malines), a city between Brussels and Antwerp. I overheard the one from Mechelen was of a better quality and could best withstand the humid Belgian air.
