Perth Off The Beaten Path: 234 reviews and 406 photos

Kwinana was named after the SS Kwinana which was driven ashore after a fire and wrecked in 1922. Kwinana is also supposed to be an Aboriginal word from the Kimberley region meaning ?pretty woman? but Kwinana is definitely not pretty in fact it?s a large industrial area about 30 mins south of Perth. There is a huge wheat storage terminal with a capacity of around 1 million tonnes making it the largest wheat storage and shipping complex in the world. BP has also built a large oil refinery here along with Western Mining and their nickel refinery. There is also a petro-chemical complex, Alco?s Aluminium works and a cement factory along with many other major heavy industries.

Kwinana itself is set aside from all the heavy industry and around 4kms inland from the large sand dunes. There is a civic centre, arts centre, indoor recreation facilities and a shopping area. Kwinana also has the wreck of the SS Kwinana after which it was named just off one of the beaches although its just part of a rusted shell at the moment.
