The Grand Palace is not a palace as westerners know the term (from the Latin 'palatino,' one of the seven hills of Rome and the one on which plutocrats and later emperors build their 'palaces,' a word also derived from 'palatino').

The Grand Palace is, instead, a conglomerate of temples, tombs, and other structures -- all magnificent, some glorious.

Address: Maharaj Pier, Chao Phraya, Bangkok
Directions: The combined compound is open 8.30am to 3.30pm everyday. Cost is 200B (if you are Thai, it's free), and includes admission to Vimanmek Mansion and Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall, both in the Dusit area.
