While in Japan, you absolutely must stay in a ryokan, which is a traditional Japanese-style inn. It completely complemented my visit! The floor is made of tatami mats (woven reeds), and most doors are shoji (sliding, paper doors). You sleep on futon-style mattresses on the floor and there is a low, wooden table where you can prepare tea. A memorable experience!

Unique Qualities: Ryokans have Asian-style toilets (you must squat) and onsens (spa for bathing), both of which are unique experiences in their own right. Slippers are usually provided as is a yakata (robe).
