Tucked in a back street, this hotel had friendly service and a good price. Breakfast was included.

REVISED for 2010: Albergo Marin is still there going strong and still has free breakfast. Mention Rick Steves' guidebook and get a discount. Pay cash, too, for potentially more discount.

It's small and only a 1-star hotel 'cause there are 0 amenities. Lugging luggage up the stairs was tiring and hot. Still, the friendly staff and the great breakfast... not to mention LOCATION (across the bridge from the train station)... make this a worthy place to stay.

Unique Qualities: It's in Venice and it's affordable... and they still make their own coffee/capuccino/lattes from scratch. Unlike most hotels, Marin's staff still made coffee to order. Considering a capuccino at a cafe cost 2 Euro and Lattes can run 4 Euro, getting complimentary latte (and a good one) at the hotel is a welcome start to your day. Thank you, Hotel Marin.
