  Buddhist Ruins
by NedHopkins

At one time Sarnath was India's main center of Buddhist learning and devotion. As Hinduism revived and replaced Buddhism as the country's principal religion, Sarnath declined.

Still, the monastic complex thrived until, in the 12th century, Muslim invaders destroyed most of the temples, monasteries, and other buildings -- and slaughtered an estimated 5,000 Buddhist monks.

The picture shows only a small part of the complex. The foundation of what is thought to have been the main temple is at the upper left. The other ruins are mostly those of classrooms and sleeping quarters.

The site is among the best maintained -- and certainly the cleanest -- we visited in India.
