  Plaza de la Candelaria
by Muya

Santa Cruz became the capital of the Canary islands in 1822, but only until 1927 when the province of the Eastern Canary Islands was created, with its own capital : Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

If you don?t have much time to visit the city, at least have a look at the following spots...

Plaza de Espana is a big round square with an enormous cross symbolizing the foundation of the city and the original wooden cross. This square was created on the eve of the civil war, where the castle San Cristobal once stood and opens on the sea-front that is actually situated along a noisy road.
Just in front of it, you?ll see the Plaza de la Candelaria with the obelisk of the Triunfo de la Candelaria and the pedestrian street with all the nice shops.
Then go to the Parque Garcia Sanabria, which is at the same time an open-air museum of contemporary statues.
