Plaza de Espana and the cross
by Muya

Santa Cruz is the capital of Tenerife and the administrative centre of the Western Canary Islands. Its name comes from the time when Alonso Fernandez de Lugo arrived on the island, on May 3rd 1494. As a sign of conquest, he build a big wooden cross that would show the world he had conquered Tenerife. The cross was called the ?santa cruz? (the holy cross) and later gave its name to the city.
The town gained more and more power during the 16th century, and when the harbour of Garachico was destroyed by a volcanic eruption, ships started to come alongside Santa Cruz instead. This was a real opportunity for the city.
