When we arrived in the Bay of Islands area of northeast New Zealand (Paihia), we asked our host what in the area shouldn't be missed? His immediate response was the Hunderwasser Toilets in nearby KawaKawa. We looked at each other and though sure a toilet. Later that evening we happened to be in the area so we thought that we might just have to see what the big deal was. They were amazing from the barber pole type pillars in the front (with grass and trees growing on the roof) to the inlaid bottles in the windows. Our first shock was men in the women's toilet and women in the men's. Not using them but just admiring the artwork.

Not satisfied with just one visit, we stopped again as we left the area. DON'T MISS THIS UNUSUAL SITE!

Address: Kawakawa, New Zealand
Directions: Kawakawa is a small town on the main north highway on the east side of the North Island. If you are visiting the Bay of Islands very close
