Finally on the upper side of the Spianada (Esplanade) stands a memorial to the British Lord High Commissioner Sir Thomas Maitland built in 1816 in the shape of a circular building with Ionian columns. It's also known for the 'cistern', because it covers the opening of an old water reservoir. At this side of the square some of the fine old mansions on Kapodistriou St. heve been converted into atmospheric hotels. We also learned that the square itself has been constructed similar to the royal gardens of Europe. It features some Venetian fountains, an acient aqueduct and a beautiful pavilion that hosts the activities of the local philharmonical bands during the summer.

For us it is clear that the local people all gather at the Spianada for their nightly stroll and to meet their acquaintances. Everyone is there, Sundays and holidays. It has become something natural and common and in its own way has become a part of their daily routine, something they feel at home with.
