Playa Jardin - Puerto de la Cruz
by easyoar

Playa Jardin is the largest beach in Puerto de la Cruz and is very popular with tourists. It is quite long (approx 1 mile?) and is covered in black sand.

Tenerife is a volcanic island (even if the huge volcano of Teide is very quiet at present!). The black sand comes from the sea breaking up the black rock, and for anyone who has not visited a volcanic island before, the black sand may be a bit of a novelty!

The beach itself was quite clean, but seems to suffer from some fairly large waves. Every day we were there, there were red flags flying, meaning that swimming is absolutely forbidden. But of course, this being Spain, absolutely forbidden appears to mean "not especially recommended", so we always saw people swimming in the sea, although we did see people knocked over by the ferocity of the waves a few times. Also being a European beach, European sunbathing (as I have quaintly heard it called in the USA) is allowed. That's topless sunbathing if you haven't already guessed!
