Not many travellers will visit Tan Tan, unless they or on their way to Western Sahara or even further south into Africa, taking the Atlantic transsahara route. We visited Tan Tan on our way back from Mauritania to Spain. Coming from the more monotonous south, the area around Tan Tan looks rather spectacular by crossing many Oueds like the Oued Draa.
Till 1958 Tan Tan was part of the Spanish Sahara, in which year the Tarfaya zone was handed over to Morocco two years after the independence.
Tan Tan is a good place to spend the night. There are several shops, internet cafés, banks and hotels. We stayed in the Bir Ansarane hotel, not far from the Oued ben Khelil. This hotel has a lovely terrace, where we had our dinner and some drinks.
25KM west of Tan Tan at the coast you will pass El-Ouatia (or Tan Tan plage). We didn't visit this place, allthough at the police checkpoint they told us we had to spend the night here, because there shouldn't be any hotel in Tan Tan.
Address: Tan Tan
