The Cactus Garden was built by Lanzarotes artist Cesar Manrique in cooperation with Botanist Estanislao Gonzales Ferrer who selected the collection of more than 1.000 species of cacti.

The big cactus in front of the entrance is fake however. It's made of iron and of course an artwork of Manrique.

Inside the garden the green cacti with their colorful blossoms form an unique contrast with the black ground of lava granules that were used in farming all over Lanzarote.

This porous stones store the moisture during the nights and give it to the roots of the plants so enabling agriculture in a region where rain is rare.

Directions: The Cactus Garden is located on the highway from Arrecife to Arrieta at the exit of the village Guatiza. Just look out for that big iron cactus.
