"Olympic Park" Olympic Ring - Anella OlÝmpica Tip by Blatherwick

  Olympic Park
by Blatherwick

This is the heart of the 1992 Olympic Site. Santiago Calatrava designed the large white tower as a communication tower for the Telefonica company. It was built to carry coverage of the games. The form of the tower is based on a Calatrava sketch of a kneeling figure making an offering. The base on which the figure 'kneels' is covered in broken glazed tiles in recognition of Gaudi. The orientation of the tower acts as a sundial by projecting the shadow of the central needle on the circular platform.

On the left you can just see the Palau Sant Jordi Sports Stadium which housed many of the indoor events. The swimming complex is on the right side of the photo.
