The statue of Liberty is probably the most popular symbol of NY (if not the entire USA). A gift from the French people (before they started quarreling with the Americans on global issues), this is indeed a worth-visiting monument. A ferry from Battery-Park takes you to the statue of Liberty and to Ellis island. Until recently only a handful of visitors - those who came with the first ferry of the day - could actually enter the statue.
