Particularly outside of the big cities, the French take a verrry long midday lunch. This is a great traditional and, no doubt, very good for one's health!

Everything closes at 12noon-ish and often does not reopen intil 3pm. I was sitting at a full bar recently drinking a grande crème when at 12.30pm everyone in the bar moved to the restaurant section to eat.

Because of this you will not normally see French people snacking between meals - the food areas will be empty between mealtimes.

The extended lunch even applies to the emergency services in some areas! The local police in Béarn recently refused to come to retrieve a car from a river until after 2pm. They panicked like hell when they finally arrived, but luckily they did not find anyone inside the car!!!

The long lunch, in my view, is a great idea overall. Far better than the British tradition of a quick sandwich in a half hour break.
