"Marshall Gold Discovery Park: Where it all began" Auburn Off The Beaten Path Tip by Tom_Fields
Auburn Off The Beaten Path: 5 reviews and 18 photos
In 1848, John Marshall stood on the bank of the American River at a mill that he and John Sutter were building. Looking into the cold, clear water, he noticed specks of gold dust. And the rest is history.
A replica of Sutter's original mill is at the site. It's also a good place for a moderate hike. Tour the historic buildings at the park. This is a great place for a day trip, or a stop.
It's on Hwy 49, about halfway between Auburn and Placerville.
