In 1865-66 this tower was built, 288ft from another further down. The idea was for ships navigating into the harbour to have something to line up so they would be in the correct channel.
In an object lesson on why you need town planning, this tower had to be rebuilt in 1877 after the newly-constructed parsonage obstructed the view.
The whole thing became redundant in 1918 when the channel was changed and new lights installed.
Now it's just an interesting tower on the hill, albeit with a nice view.
Address: Brown Street, Newcastle.
