To the right of the cathedral as you look at it, on its south side, is the Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace) , a slightly scruffy, and relatively unimposing building which has been home to many of Milan's luminaries over the centuries since it was first built in 1138. It started life as the town hall, but then became the residence of families like the Torriani, Visconti and then the Sforza family, who were responsible for Milan's impressive castle. Inside the palace you will find a museum and an exhibition centre.
