There are about 38 different species of mongoose, and they are found all over Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and Hawaii. Although mainly terrestrial, the mongoose will climb if necessary. They live on small vertebrates and rodents which they uncover by scratching the ground with their claws. They are mostly solitary animals, but can be found in small groups. These three were found in the camp grounds. They are said to be nomadic animals and rarely forage in the same area for more than a few days at the time and use their keen eyesight to look out for predators from the top of termite mounds. Two to four young are produced in each litter after a gestation period of five weeks. Their main predators are birds of prey and snakes, although some species are brave enough to take on a snake and will often win.
