Usually a solitary animal, this medium sized antelope is found over a large area of Africa. It reaches a height of 70cm and can weigh around 50kg. At least 40 different varieties have bee found, differing in their colour and pattern. Only the male have horns. Their diet consists of bark, grass, fallen fruit and flowers. The do need some water, but can subsist for some considerable time on dew.

Although not territorial, a buchbuck will defend the area of a female on heat. After a gestation period of 6 months, a single calf is born. The mother cleans the newborn calf and eats the placenta. The calf will stay f well hidden and the mother even eats its dung so no scent remains to attract predators, such as lion, leopard and hyena.

This particular buck was found in the grounds of the camp, where a number of animals have become habituated.
