The eland is the largest antelope in the Mara, with an adult bull weighing up to 900 kg and reaching a height of 2m at the shoulders. Both the male and the female have horns. There are three subspecies. Despite their bulk, eland can jump to a height of 8 ft.

Eland are usually found in herds of up to 60 animals, often in association with zebra and wildebeest, but they do not establish territories. They have been extensively hunted for their hide and meat. Their main diet consists of shrubs and bushes, but also eat, bulbs, roots and fruit.

After a gestation period of about nine months, a single calf is born. Births take place all throughout the year. The young are weaned at around 3 months old after which time they remain in nursery groups.

Eland can be domesticated and trained to pull a harness.
