The former bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully decided to build a new church for the growing population of the city in 1163. About 180 years later the Notre Dame was finished: in the year 1345.

Because in these days illiteracy was very normal, al the stories were told by paintings, glass and sculptures in the Notre Dame. If you take a look at these images you immediately understand why the constuction took so long.

The church from the outside is abviously Gothic. All the time people are cleaning the walls. When the walls are freshly cleaned, the white of the stone is really beautiful, but when the walls are black of pollution, you can always come back at nicht, when the church is wonderfully lighted.

In front of the Notre Dame you´ll find a cupper plate in the pavement. This is the centerpoint of France. From here every distance in the country is measured.
