I like to visit galleries a lot so the National Gallery was a must for me although I was a very short time in London.
I was surprised that not so many people where there but probably most of the people did their x-mas shopping.
In 1824 the British government bought 38 paintings (Tizian, Raffael, Rembrandt, Rubens, ... those were just some of the painter). Now the National Gallery's permanent collection spans the period from about 1250 to 1900.
