If you have a free week-end, why not drive to Malaysia east coast to Mersing (less than an hour from Johor Bahru JB), take a 1 hour boat ride to Pulau Besar (an isolated island) and enjoy snorkling and nothing at all.

It's an island like many other where you dock at the end of a long walkway, overing a shallow reaf (2-6 feet deep), to the edge of the reaf (40-200 feet deep). You can snorkle there or scuba.

They have facilities there for a few nights and activities to do on the island, mostly trecking and beaching. I don't think there is room for more than a hundred people on the whole island. Please check it out.

There is Radin Island Resort, confortable and more organized activities. Also more expensive.

There is the Hillside Chalet Island Resort, more Kampung-style, but quite OK. This is where I stayed, the snorkling in the reef was great (except for the bad sunburn I got on my back), we hiked to the East shore of the island to a beach nicknamed 'beach of eternal love'... we didn't but the sand was great.
