I insisted on visiting this small town because I wanted to see Nuestra Senora de Candelaria, the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands, and also the famous statues of the Guanches kings, the first inhabitants of the islands. Trying to find them, we discovered a lovely little town with a nice sea front and a pretty square, where you'll find the Basilica of Candelaria, build in 1950 and housing the patroness of the Canaries. The Black Virgin actually contributed to the fame of the city, as she brings each year a lot of tourists to Candelaria. Although the official festivities take place on February 2nd, her appearance is celebrated on the 15th of August. This is when the faithful flock to the cathedral from all over the island.

Directions: 11 km from Guïmar, and 20 km from Santa Cruz
