"Depressing atmosphere" Ground Zero - World Trade Center Tip by Jinglis

My girlfriend and I only used the subway once when we visited the city. We went from midtown to lower Manhattan one day but didn't know exactly where to come off the train. We got off at Fulton Street and didn't realise that at the top of the stairs was the World Trade Centre site. It was hard to take in, especially for my girlfriend who had visited the towers a number of times previously. There were many flags and materials that visitors from all over the world had signed and left on the neighbouring fences. This support and respect contrasted with the stalls set up on street corners selling memorabilia and souveniers of the diaster - a disgusting sight. Many people were taking pictures of the site from behind a fence. A strange atmosphere overall, and nobody seemed to know how to react to the reality of it.
