"Princes' Islands: Büyükada - Hiristos Manastiri" Istanbul Off The Beaten Path Tip by vtveen

Close to the football ‘stadium’ on the Hill of Isa, Büyükada’s second highest hill, lies a little monastery. It is called Hiristos Manastiri (Monastery of Jesus Christ).

It is one of the oldest monasteries on the island and probably built on the ruins of a very old convent of 1597, whose foundation might trace back to the Byzantine era.

It was once built by Bishop Meletios Pigas. August 6th was a special holiday, which in one sense symbolized the grape harvest. On that day (in the past) the priest offered grapes to any visitors.

When we reached the monastery, it seemed to be closed. But the two gates were yet open and we found the sexton, living in the house on the premises. He showed us the lovely church with some beautiful icons.
This is really a lovely quiet spot.
