The main tower, very similar to the Elephant Tower, is situated at one end of the castle, erected by Pisani in 1217 on the hill of San Michele. It was built in 1305 and covered on three sides with limestone;
the fourth side, facing the castle, is open, in perfect Pisani's style, showing four floors built on wooden lofts. Around 1328, the Aragonese closed it to use the tower as a residence and warehouse. In the 19th century it was used as a prison for political prisoners. At the beginning of the 20th century a renovation work reopened the side, closed by the Spanish, and brought the tower back to its original aspect. From the tower, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of the city, from the harbour to the sella del Diavolo, on the Poetto waterfront.
