TheElephant tower, very similar to the San Pancrazio Tower, is on one side of the castle, erected by Pisani in 1217 on the hill of San Michele. It was built in 1307 and covered on three sides with limestone; the fourth, facing the castle, is open, in perfect Pisani's style and shows four floors built on wooden lofts. Around 1328 the Aragonese closed the northern part to use the tower as a residence and a warehouse: they used it also for a gruesome ritual; they used to expose, behind iron grids, the decapitated heads of those sentenced to death, as a stern warning to all malefactors.
In the 19th century the tower became a prison for political prisoners. It was renovated in 1906; the closed wall was reopened, bringing it back to its original aspect.
Its strange name derives, it's easy to understand, from the statue of the elephant, symbol of strength and loyalty (made by an unknown artist in the same period as the tower), collocated about 10 metres away from the side of viale Universitą.
