From the moment you step into the open reception area, you become one with the serenity and calm of this area. Set apart from other hotels, Turtle Bay is quite a nice place to stay.

The staff was, without exception, friendly and accomodating. From housekeepers who greet you with "good morning" to wait staff to managers, we never found a grumpy person. The rooms were nicely done. Our first room has a small leak and after I reported it, they offered to move me to another room so they could fix it. I was "upgraded" to a deluxe ocean view room. The only difference between standard and deluxe is the size of the balcony, so know that when you make reservations. We did have a view of the sunrise and sunset, so I would request the west wing, odd numbered rooms if I went again.

One negative was the water in the shower....almost drip-like. Since it was that way in both our rooms, we figured it was that way in all the rooms.

The facility is well kept and clean. The biggest complaint we had was with our dining experiences. The Palm Terrace (the main place to eat all your meals) is expensive and does not have good food. The entree prices are about the same price as the nightly buffet, where you get fruit, salad and dessert, so it almost doesn't pay to get a "regular" meal. If you do venture from the buffet, we can't even recommend a good meal to order. The food quality in this restaurant needs to be improved!!!! Also, we did not see a kid's menu.

The "sports bar" is big, but needs a makeover. It is way too cold in there too. We visited on 4 different occasions and the air was down to 65. Not what you want after being outdoors all day. Not enough decorations and much of the place needs some paint. No free goodies either. Come on, for $7 or more a drink, they can cough up some trailmix.

The Sandbar is your ordinary snackbar by the sea, with average food. They ran out of food in the afternoon, so that wasn't fun. Also, the bathroom needs to be cleaned more frequently...it was really bad.

Unique Qualities: This place is isolated, so expect that when you get here. We found another quaint town with shops and great restaurants about 20 minutes away, or Waikiki is a 60 minute drive via 83 on the east coast. There is no nightlife at Turtle Bay, so if you are looking for a nighttime party, you won't find it here. You have to drive to Waikiki for that, and believe me, it is like going from Gilligan's Island to the big city. Waikiki is a metropolis with scores of people and all kinds of things to see and do. Turtle Bay is relaxed and quiet.
There are a lot of activities at the resort and we had great experiences snorkeling, riding horses, playing golf and battling the winds to play tennis.

The waves were 15-30 feet the day we arrived, so it made for some dramatic pictures, but rough swimming conditions. Later in the week, the seas calmed, and except for coral and rocks on your feet, the water was perfect.

On the poolside, we enjoyed the service and drinks, but chairs were at a premium by 10am. Many people go early and stake out a chair, so beware. The main pool was clean and chilly, but there is also a nice smaller pool that was heated, plus a couple jacuzzis.
