"The Whole Island!" Top 5 Page for this destination Tahiti Tourist Trap Tip by easyoar

Tahiti Tourist Traps: 2 reviews and 1 photos

It is difficult to know where to start (or indeed finish) when it comes to Tourist Traps on Tahiti.

As I laid out in the intro, France has closed her Nuclear Testing facility in the area, and the money that was pumped in to French Polynesia is starting to run out. This means that not only are prices artifically high as people cling on to a very inflated standard of living, but also people have got used to not living in the traditional way, and not doing meanial labour either. In the past cheap overseas labour was brought in to do jobs, but these days the Tahitians are finding it necessary to do some of these jobs themselves.

Theft is also pretty high here, not violent crime, but petty stealing from cars etc.

I also found that if something was closed, people would pretend it was still open to get you to go on a tour or into a shop.

Beware, everyone is after a huge cut of whatever they can get, the best advice I can give is to try and do everything yourself (e.g. rent a car and drive yourself about, the Island is not complicated!)
