"The Blue Mosque" Blue Mosque - Sultan Ahmed Mosque Tip by sswagner

This is the only mosque in Istanbul with 6 minarets. Rumor has it that this happened because the word for "gold" sounded like the word for "six" in the native language of the designer. So, the sultan asked for a gold minaret, and well, he got six! While it may not be blue on the outside, you will find the tiles on the inside that give the mosque its namesake. Of course, tourists can not visit during prayer times, but there will be plenty of opportunity to see the large interior. Of course, you must remove your shoes and carry them with you Plastic bags are available for this. I highly recommend spending some time in the courtyard to admire the design with its many spires and domes. The design is influenced greatly by the adjacent Haghia Sophia. I believe that some of the builders of the Blue Mosque went on to help with the Taj Mahal in India. There are some interesting similarities with all of these structures.
