"Haghia Sophia (Holy Wisdom)" Hagia Sophia - Ayia Sofia - Ayasofya Tip by sswagner

This is one of the most important religious structures in the world. Built over 1500 years ago, it served as the main church of Constantinople. When the Ottomans took over, it was converted to a mosque. In modern times, it became a museum. Oustide, you will see grand architecture as well as remains of an earlier church built on the same spot. Inside, you will see a vast interior with mosaics from the Christian period, and the Islamic mihrab which points to Mecca. There are many windows to bring some light into the building. There are also many places to explore in this ancient structure. While the cost of admission is high, do not fail to see this. It was at the top of my list. Be advised this building is closed on Mondays (at the time of this entry).
