Does it tell the time? or a Martian landing site?

Many people place Stonehenge high on their list of 'to do' things in England. If they imagine that they will be alone with the mystical stones, get up close and feel their presence - then they will be somewhat disappointed.

The truth of the matter is that a main A-road runs close by (despite frequent plans to put it in a tunnel or divert it), the facilities area are a mess, you have to pay over five quid to get in and top all that you can't actually get very near the stones at all.

I understand that the stones have to be protected for future generations, but English Heritage (who run the site) have contrived to make a visit to Stonehenge an underwhelming experience in the eyes of many visitors.

UPDATE : DEC 18 2004

Very oddly, just a couple of days after writing the above I notice a 67 million pound plan is put in place to sort out the mess. The roads put in tunnels, decent facilities and general clearing of the mess and clutter.

Unique Suggestions: Come at an odd time to avoid the crowds.

Fun Alternatives: Woodhenge, only 2 miles away is just as interesting and contemporary with Stonehenge. Other stone circles such as Avebury are in fact far more spectacular to visit.
