  The stunning Golden Staircase
by andy613

A combination of Byzantine, Gothic and renaissance architecture, the like of which can only be seen in Venice (that is, of course, unless you, dear reader, knows better...)
Some vast rooms adorned from wall to wall with paintings depicting the various Doges and the history of the city state are truly stunning. The vastness of the rooms is not to be outdone by the vastness of the paintings; the worlds largest oil painting is to be found in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio.
Get on one of the guided tours if you can. They show you parts of the apartments and dungeons you dont see if you're on your own.
If you can remember the system of government and the various councils and who elected whom, you're a better man than I..!
We got there late in the afternoon and had no trouble with queue's. We had plenty of time, though it might have been why we missed the guided tours.
