Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, along with the National Concert Hall and National Theater, form the 24 hectares Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Park and it is one of Taipei's landmarks. Chiang Kai-shek is one of the most important historial figures (along with his mentor Sun Yat-sun and his nemesis Mao Ze-Dong) in China history for the last century. He was the successor to Sun Yat-sun as the leader of KouMinTang and became the leader of Republic of China (ROC) in 1928. In 30s, he led China in World War 2 again Japan and in 40s, he led his government in the Chinese Civil War again the Chinese Communists. Eventually he lost the war to Mao Ze-dong and had to fleeto Taiwan in 1949. he continued the presidency of ROC and ruled Taiwan until his death in 1975. The Memorial Hall was opened in 1980, fifth anniversary of his death.
