The Rankot Vihara is also known as the "Golden Pinnacle Shrine." It's the largest dagoba in Polonnaruwa and it's 55 metres high. It's also the fourth largest in Sri Lanka (the other three are all in Anuradhapura). It was built by Nissanka Malla in the 12th century. Apparently there is somewhere an inscription which says that the king had watched over its construction. Did he really do that? Who knows... All I know is that the perfect spire of the construction, together with the "once-upon-a-time" golden pinnacle, is a sight that would have befitted a king.
