"Chartley Castle" Uttoxeter Off The Beaten Path Tip by masc4s

Uttoxeter Off The Beaten Path: 19 reviews and 19 photos

Mary Queen of Scots fled to England to ask for help from her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. Instead, she was imprisoned. After 19 years of trying to obtain her freedom, she was charged and found guilty, I think unjustly, of taking part in a plot to kill Elizabeth.

For a time during her captivity she was held prisoner in the picturesque Vale of Trent at Chartley Castle before being executed, by beheading, at Fotheringay, Northamptonshire, on the 8th February 1587. She was 44 years old.

Chartley castle is a large and impressive 13th century stone walled fortress built on high ground with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Founded by Ranulph Blundeville, Earl of Chester the castle is situated at Chartley Holme near Stow-by Chartley, 7 miles southwest of Uttoxeter and 7 miles northeast of Stafford.

Situated on the A518 Uttoxeter Road 2 miles from Stow-by Chartley.
