HOTEL LES DEGRES DE NOTRE DAME
10 RUE DES GRANDS DEGRES

Situated on the picturesque Square Restif de la Bretonne (rue de la Bûcherie meanders from this street to Shakespeare & Co.), you'll want to feast on the terrasse on piquantly spicy, tasty couscous. The current trend in Paris tends towards North African cuisine and this very inexpensive couscouserie is great place to try it. Couscous is a grainy pasta served on a platter accompanied by a huge tureen with broth & veggies (potatoes, carrots, turnips) along with a spicy sauce with choice of meat (merguez sausage, chicken, lamb). The owner, Monsieur Tahir, is Algerian so the cuisine is tres authentique!

Attached to the hotel of the same name, this combined restaurant/bar is a different dining experience; some guides list the hotel as an "auberge", a designation for a country inn hotel/restaurant. Food & service are wonderful!

This hotel/resto is shown in the background during the 1995 movie Sabrina.

Bar stays open all night except for Sunday.

April 2003, I tried the couscous with the merguez (non-pork) sausage, a kir & a glass of wine.
